    • If the paint might be old, test it for lead first, and never scour lead paint with steel wool.
    • Keep #4 off anything you want to preserve, since it cuts too deep for finish or soft metal.

    How to use

    1. Step 1Wear gloves and work where loose strands are easy to sweep up.
    2. Step 2Scrub rust in short strokes, turning the pad as it loads up.
    3. Step 3On finish, let the stripper soften it first, then scrub the softened layer off.
    4. Step 4Smooth the surface with #2 or #1 before you refinish.

    About this product

The roughest grade, for rust and heavy stripping

Grade #4 is the coarsest steel wool in the Rhodes American line, one step rougher than #3. Reach for it when scratches do not matter: scrubbing heavy rust off iron, or tearing through finish that a stripper has already softened.

It removes material fast and leaves deep marks behind, so plan on a finer grade before any new finish goes on. Homax packs #4 in bags of 12 or 36 pads, and there is also a 5-pack of bags.

    Before you start

Stripping paint from old furniture or trim? In a home built before 1978 the paint may contain lead, and the EPA asks you not to clean or rub such paint with steel wool, because it raises lead dust. Have the paint tested first.
