    • Try the knob setting on a scrap board first, since too much mud leaves a thick ridge to sand later.
    • Clean the body and head the same day, before compound hardens inside the tool.

    How to use

    1. Step 1Mix the compound smooth and free of lumps before you fill the body.
    2. Step 2Thread the tape through the head and set the mud knob to a light feed.
    3. Step 3Start at one end of the seam and pull the tool along it with steady pressure.
    4. Step 4Flatten the bedded tape with a knife, then apply finish coats once it dries.

    About this product

Bedding tape and mud in a single pass along the seam

Taping by hand means two trips along every seam: one to lay compound, one to press the tape into it. This Homax tool does both at once. You load up to 5 pounds of mud into the body and a roll of up to 500 feet of tape, then run it along the joint.

An adjustable knob sets how much compound feeds under the tape, and tracking wheels keep the tape on the seam. What you end up with is a bedded tape joint, ready for the finish coats and sanding that still follow. It pays off on a basement or a run of new walls more than on a single patch.

    Before you start

In a house built before 1978 the paint around the hole may contain lead. Do not dry-sand or power-sand old paint until it has been tested, mist the area and clean up with a damp cloth instead of a broom. Drywall dust itself is fine and travels, so sand with a mask on.
