    For best results

    • Skip steel wool under a water-based finish, where leftover strands can rust, and use bronze wool for that job.
    • Test a pot's coating or a tile's glaze in a hidden spot first, since even fine wool scratches some surfaces.

    How to use

    1. Step 1Let the coat dry hard, then rub lightly with the grain until the surface feels smooth.
    2. Step 2Vacuum or wipe off every bit of steel dust before the next coat.
    3. Step 3On cookware or tile, use the pad with a mild cleanser and rinse well.

    About this product

Between coats, and around the kitchen and shop

Grade #0 is where the Rhodes American line turns from stripping to finishing. It is fine enough to rub down a dried coat of paint or varnish before the next one, yet it still has the bite to scour metal, pots and pans, porcelain, tile and grout.

It takes rust off metal tools and helps keep them protected, and it cleans tires. Homax puts 16 pads in a bag. If a final coat needs a gentler rub, step up to the very fine grade, and for rougher prep on bare wood, drop back to #1.

    Before you start

Stripping paint from old furniture or trim? In a home built before 1978 the paint may contain lead, and the EPA asks you not to clean or rub such paint with steel wool, because it raises lead dust. Have the paint tested first.
