Patching a popcorn ceiling, or scraping it off

Popcorn cans are patch cans. The Homax Professional Match can covers up to 2 sq ft and Easy Patch up to 4 sq ft, so plan on a can for a water stain or the ring around a moved light, not for a whole ceiling. The plain popcorn aerosol and Professional Match both carry real polystyrene chips. The plain can sprays best between 68 and 72 degrees F, held upright 18 to 24 inches below the ceiling, after a full minute of shaking. The Pro Grade can also matches perlite and other aggregates.

Removal is a separate job. The Homax popcorn scraper has a 12 inch blade, threads onto a standard extension pole and holds a plastic bag under the blade to catch what falls, though the pole and the bag are not in the box. Before you scrape an older ceiling, have it tested: EPA says you cannot tell asbestos by looking, and it advises against scraping, sanding or sweeping material that may contain it. EPA also advises leaving the sample to a trained, accredited professional rather than taking it yourself.

Questions

Popcorn ceiling texture: what people ask

Which Homax popcorn texture fits your patch?

Easy Patch is a water-based 14 oz can for small spots. Professional Match is made for popcorn that was sprayed on when the house was built. Pro Grade copies polystyrene, perlite and other aggregates. The acoustic touch-up kit uses a hand sprayer and a bottle for up to 2 sq ft.

How do you keep a Homax popcorn can spraying?

Shake it hard for a full minute after the ball starts to rattle, and keep shaking as you work. The texture inside is thick. To store the Easy Patch can, remove the straw, turn the can upside down and spray until the nozzle runs clear.

How does the Homax popcorn ceiling scraper keep the mess off your floor?

A fitting on the scraper holds a plastic bag under the 12 in blade, so the texture falls into the bag rather than onto the floor. The handle is threaded for a standard extension pole. The bag and the pole are not included.
