- Before you degloss trim in an older home, test the paint for lead, because steel wool should not touch lead paint.
- Pick out every steel strand before a water-based coat, or rust specks can show through it.
How to use
How to use
- Step 1Dampen bare wood lightly, let it dry, and rub with the grain to cut the raised fibers.
- Step 2Wipe the dust off with a tack cloth before you prime or stain.
- Step 3To degloss paint, rub until the shine turns evenly dull, then wash and rinse the surface.
About this product
Getting bare wood ready for its first coat
Wet wood swells and its fibers stand up, leaving a fuzzy surface after the first wipe of stain or water. Grade #1 medium steel wool cuts those raised fibers down and gets bare wood ready for its primary coat. It is one step finer than #2 and one step rougher than the fine grade.
You can also use #1 to degloss a painted surface before recoating, so the new paint has something to grip, and to clean copper pipes and fittings. Around the house it lifts scuffs from linoleum floors, and it even cleans bowling balls. Homax bags it in 16 or 36 pads.
The steel wool shelf holds 9 more products beside the Rhodes American Steel Wool, #1 Medium, and every one belongs to Homax products.

Before you start
Stripping paint from old furniture or trim? In a home built before 1978 the paint may contain lead, and the EPA asks you not to clean or rub such paint with steel wool, because it raises lead dust. Have the paint tested first.
